Radiance field representations have become a groundbreaking innovation in the world of immersive technologies, enabling high-quality, free-viewpoint rendering of 3D and 4D environments derived from 2D images. These advancements have unlocked transformative possibilities for applications like gaming, telepresence, mapping, and integrating real and virtual scenes. Radiance fields can be created using implicit methods like Neural Radiance Fields or explicit techniques such as 3D Gaussian Splatting. While these approaches significantly enhance visual quality, they also present challenges in interoperability and data compression, creating a pressing need for standardization.
Recognizing the importance of radiance fields, the JPEG and MPEG standardization committees are jointly hosting an online workshop to explore radiance field technologies and discuss their role in shaping standards for coding and interoperability. The workshop features expert-led presentations and discussions that delve into cutting-edge developments and industry applications.
